Information Updates
Hazardous waste Self Audit Protocol in Development
As part of a BC Ministry of Environment (MOE) funded hazardous waste compliance improvement initiative BCEIA developed an audit program designed to promote proper hazardous materials management and regulatory compliance for those companies that handle, transport, manage and treat hazardous materials under the auspices of the BC Hazardous Waste Regulation (HWR). Specifically, the Program supported a series of audits for those industry stakeholders who would like to ascertain their overall degree of compliance with the HWR and enjoy 50% of audit costs, paid for by the BCEIA. Audit tools and protocols were developed for use by experienced waste management auditors contracted to complete the audits. The audit findings remain confidential and are provided to the facility owner/operator for their use. This program has now been completed and the tools and protocols developed are being modified as part of a continuing self-audit program.
In January 2010 MOE provided approval of the use of the remaining program funds to extend the audit program to allow companies to self-audit their facilities. BCEIA has awarded a contract to SLR Consulting (Canada) Ltd, to revise the audit tools to make them more user friendly for owner/operators. The self-assessment tools should be completed by end of March and are scheduled to be available on the BCEIA web site in April this year. BCEIA is scheduling events around the province to assist owner/operators with the uses of the tools.
