The results are contributing to better understanding of mechanisms of contamination and migration of contaminants in the environment, environmental risk, and how to protect human health and our environment. Outputs from her work are being used to develop remediation/treatment technologies.

Working closely with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other research associates, Dr. Li has investigated a wide range of problems which are fundamental in nature, but which have practical application. Some of the topics studied in the recent past include factors leading to the spread of brominated and fluorinated contaminants in the environment, and how they migrate and are transformed to by-products in surface and subsurface soils; volatile organic compound migration and intrusion into building slabs; partitioning and fate of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); and mobility, partitioning and fate of heavy metals along highways. Applications studied include development of a novel sustainable method of removing heavy metals from acid rock drainage with regeneration of sorbents, development of a novel sorbent from solid waste for contaminated water treatment, landfill liners and clay mineral applications. She has also worked on reduction of red mud tailings generated in the Bayer Process, development of mud tailing disposal techniques, environmental monitoring and assessment. Many of the projects are motivated by direct environmental and industrial interests. Her research is funded by governmental and industrial sources.

Dr. Li is also involved, often in collaboration with researchers from other departments, industry and government, in the factors leading to the drinking water pipe corrosion and water quality, extraction of nutrients and contaminants from surface water runoffs, removal of contaminants from waste streams and sediments, and development of unique clay resources of British Columbia.
