BCEIA Announces Mike Macfarlane Memorial Scholarship

This past year, our industry lost a very special individual.

Michael Macfarlane, or Mike to those who knew him, was a scientist, friend, dad, son, brother, and member of the BC environmental professional community. Mike was instrumental in the establishment of many of the pieces of legislation that today make up the Contaminated Site Regulations. His signature and finger prints can be found throughout many of the details. Through his leadership, thoughtfulness and understanding of the work that many of us do, Mike made a profound impact on the environmental industry here in BC.

The BCEIA, its board, our members, and the environmental community at large, knew that Mike was passionate about knowledge; pushing the envelope to make better regulations, and understanding that no two sites were the same. He always attempted to use his knowledge of the industry to give to others and to ensure that the next cohort of professionals had the tools and information to make better decisions. Without his presence, the regulations, and their effect on the BC Environment industry would be quite different.

In recognition of Mike’s many contributions, the BCEIA has renamed our post secondary scholarship, the Mike Macfarlane Memorial Scholarship. Two students will be receiving this scholarship and we will be announcing the recipients at BEST 2018.
