2018 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment

OCTOBER 2, 2018 – The 2018 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment were tabled today in the House of Commons.

These reports specifically examines the following issues:

  • Toxic Substances This audit focused on whether Environment and Climate Change Canada enforced regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 to control the risks of toxic substances.
  • Protecting Marine Mammals This audit focused on whether Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Parks Canada, and Transport Canada had adequately protected marine mammals in waters under the jurisdiction of Canada from threats posed by marine vessels and commercial fishing (not including the harvesting of marine mammals).
  • Departmental Progress in Implementing Sustainable Development Strategies This audit focused on whether the organizations we examined adequately applied the Cabinet Directive on the Environmental Assessment of Policy, Plan and Program Proposals, and whether they met their commitments to strengthening their strategic environmental assessment practices.
